Research Visits to Norway

This page contains information for those who are going to include visiting researcher stays in an application for a research project. It is only possible to include visiting researcher stays in applications where this is specified in the call text. Note that we do not have a separate call for proposals for visiting researchers.

The funding is granted to an approved Norwegian research organisation hosting the researcher/postdoctoral fellow (visiting researcher). The visiting researcher must have a doctoral degree or equivalent and be employed as a researcher or postdoctoral fellow at their own institution.

Expenses covered

Funding is only provided for research visits lasting from one to 12 months. The funding is disbursed as a lump sum to cover the visiting researcher’s costs of settling in and other extra costs in connection with the research visit to Norway. Funding is disbursed to the Norwegian research organisation that is hosting the visiting researcher, and the research organisation decides which costs are to be covered in connection with the research visit. Additional costs that exceed the lump sum and travel costs must be covered by the research organisation.

Rates for research visits to Norway (the rates apply for 2024):

Month 1: NOK 58 000
Month 2–12: NOK 34 000

In addition to the fixed rates above, the host organisation may apply for funding to cover round-trip travel costs (cheapest mode of travel) for the visiting researcher.

The following rules apply for travel costs for the visiting researcher’s family:

  • If the visiting researcher has children under the age of 16, the family’s travel costs may be covered regardless of the length of the research visit to Norway. The family members must reside together with the visiting researcher throughout the entire research stay in Norway.
  • If the visiting researcher has children between the ages of 16 and 18, the family’s travel costs may be covered provided that funding for the research visit has been awarded for at least three months. The family members must reside together with the visiting researcher for the entire research stay in Norway.
  • A family is defined as a visiting researcher accompanied by a spouse, common-law partner or registered partner and any children. A common-law partner is a person with whom the visiting researcher has lived in a marriage-like relationship for the past two years or shares a common address.

Costs related to the research visit to Norway must be entered under “Other operating expenses” in the budget information in the application form. In cases where a research visit will extend across two calendar years, the entire funding amount sought should be entered under the first year.

Disbursement of funding

It is the Project Owner (the research organisation in Norway) that applies for and is the recipient of funding awarded by the Research Council for research visits to Norway. The Project Owner is responsible for ensuring that the funding is used in accordance with the terms and conditions of the funding allocation.
