Approved research organisations

Most of the Research Council's calls for proposals require that the Project Owner or project partners must be an approved research organisation. You can find the definition of approved research organizations in our list.

Please note that the Norwegian information page is the legally binding version.

The Research Council's list of approved research organisations is divided into six groups:

  1. Universities, specialised university colleges, university colleges accredited at the institutional level by NOKUT.
  2. Organisations covered by the Guidelines for central government basic funding of research institutes and research groups.

  3. Other organisations covered by the Government's Strategy for Comprehensive Institute Policy.

  4. Health trusts/hospitals with statutory tasks in research and development and private, non-profit hospitals that are included in the Ministry of Health and Care Services' measurement system for research

  5. Other entities in the public sector that are required to carry out research

  6. Research organisations approved following an application to the Research Council

Organisations that believe they belong to one of the first five groups and  are not currently  included on the Research Council's list can contact the Research Council and ask to be included.

Other organisations that believe they fall under the Research Council's definition of a research organisation and meet the requirements below may apply to the Research Council to be approved as a research organisation. See How to apply for approval as a research organisation (in Norwegian only). If the organisation is approved, it will be included on the list in the sixth group.

Organisations that are on the list of approved research organisations, but which no longer meet the requirements for this, must notify the Research Council of this.

Also note:

  • An approved research organisation may not act as a company in applications to the Research Council.
  • A public entity that is on the list of approved research organisations may have the role of both a public entity and a research organisation in applications to the Research Council, but not within a single call.
  • Technology Transfer Offices, also known as Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs), may have the role of Project Owner in some projects with our support. In such cases, it will be clearly stated in the call that TTOs can apply for funding.
