General Instructions:

The aim of the Norwegian Antarctic Research Seminar is to build and strengthen connections between Antarctic researchers based in Norway. To do so, the seminar combines opportunities to share research interests with opportunities to discuss present and future research directions and collaborations through a combination of research presentations, panel discussions, and smaller group “tenketank” sessions that cut across disciplines. The seminar welcomes all scholars, including Early Career Researchers (ECRs), researchers whose work may be relevant to Antarctica without being primarily focused on Antarctica, and researchers who are newly arrived in Norway.

In keeping with the seminar’s aim, research presentations should stress the main lines of the work and its novelty – aiming to intrigue as much as to convince the audience. Presentations should be accessible to researchers in a wide range of disciplines and keep strictly to the time limit. Tenketank sessions will take up questions and opportunities raised in the presentations and the panel discussions. The main working language of the seminar is Norwegian, but speakers who are not comfortable to present in Norwegian are welcome to present in English, and the organizers encourage the use of English-language slides, also in Norwegian-language presentations.

Tema #1 “Antarctic science is my future!”

The first theme of the seminar will highlight the work and ideas of early career researchers. We invite contributions from scientists in any discipline at the early stage of their careers: PhD students, postdocs, and researchers. The talks should present ongoing research in and on Antarctica, and future plans or ideas and results that can be transferrable to Antarctic research (for example, Arctic studies that can be considered in the Antarctic context).

Tema #2: “My research in a wider context - why does my work matter” ?

The second theme of the seminar is aimed towards mid-career researchers who have been active in Antarctic research in any discipline, and are running or have recently finished research projects with, for example, a regional focus.  In keeping with the general theme of developing a forward-looking Norwegian Antarctic research environment, we aim to move away from the traditional format of presenting and defending the outputs of scientific research and, instead, provide a forum whereby others can learn from experienced Antarctic researchers with respect to the formulation of research questions which contribute to a bigger picture.

Tema #3: “Future-proofing Norwegian Antarctic research”

The third theme is forward-looking, aiming to facilitate the exchange of opinions and discussions on the future directions of Norwegian Antarctic research. We seek contributions from senior researchers, research group leaders, research funders, or any individuals willing to share their view on relevant questions for this section, such as: Which areas should we focus on or enhance our contribution to, and why? What obstacles exist, and how can they be addressed?
