Artificial Intelligence Initiative
The Norwegian Government is increasing research efforts on artificial intelligence and digital technologies by at least one billion over the next five years. Six national research centres on artificial intelligence will start up in 2025. Their goal is to strengthen and complement the existing AI portfolio consisting of many hundreds of research and innovation projects, including several large research centres.

The six Norwegian AI centres 2025–2030
- AI Decisions – Centre on AI for Decisions
- AI Learn – AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning
- MishMash – Centre for AI & Creativity
- NCEI – Centre for Embodied AI
- SURE AI – Sustainable, Risk-averse and Ethical AI
- TRUST – Centre for Trustworthy AI

Overview of AI projects and other research centres
In the Research Council's project bank, you can find statistics and an overview of all AI projects funded by us or the EU by searching for the topic: "Artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analysis" and/or "Robotics, automation". In 2025, there will be over 600 active projects with a planned consumption of NOK 1 billion.
The AI billion has also financed
- 25 industrial PhD projects (10 in 2024, 15 in 2025) and five public sector PhD projects (2025) have been awarded, a total of NOK 62 million. See the project bank for example: Industrial PhD and Public Sector PhD marked with AI.
- NOK 15 million has been set aside for NordForsk's call for proposals on Responsible use of AI, with planned allocation in December 2025.
- NOK 1 million has been set aside for the announcement of a pilot project for cooperation with South Korea.
