Competence description

In the new application system, you do not have to submit traditional CVs. Instead, we ask for a textual description of the competence in the project where you emphasise factors that are relevant to the implementation of the project for which you apply for funding. In some calls, we only ask that you describe the competence in the project group as a whole, while in other calls we also ask for individual descriptions of competence.

Overall description of the project group's competence

We ask you to describe the project group's expertise and experience as a whole and ask you to show how this is relevant for carrying out the project with high quality. You must account for how the competence covers the project's academic and methodological needs and ability to implement.

Explain how roles, responsibilities and tasks are distributed among the project participants and how this ensures a clear division of responsibilities, effective interaction and sufficient capacity to carry out the project's work packages and deliverables. The text field amounts to 3000 characters for the project team as a whole.

Individual competence description (résumé)

In many calls, we ask for individual résumés for people who will have key roles in the implementation of the project. We use a flexible narrative résumé template developed by UK Research and Innovation. You must structure the text according to the four module headings in the template. You can submit a résumé for the project manager and up to four project participants. The text field amounts to 2000 characters per person.

The résumé should focus on evidencing the person’s ability and potential to carry out the project.

You can highlight individual achievements where appropriate, but the contributions should demonstrate the appropriateness of the overall team. Different team members may demonstrate complementary skills.

Guidance to application form

Fill in the name first, and the ORCID (a free identifier for individuals to use as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation activities) if you have one. Next, you need to structure your answer into the four module headings.

Emphasize conditions that are of relevance to this project. If you want to add relevant references, enter the title of the article, the name of the journal and the year.

Module 1: Research results

Explain your contributions to the generation of new ideas, tools, methodologies or knowledge. For example, you could include

  • how you communicated your ideas and results
  • key outputs, such as data sets, software, research and policy publications
  • skills acquired from past research projects

Module 2: Project experience

Explain your contributions to the development of others and maintenance of effective working relationships. For example, you could include

  • expertise you provided that was critical to the team’s success
  • teaching activities, workshops and mentoring
  • your leadership in shaping the direction of a team

Module 3: Research management

Explain your contributions to the wider research and innovation community. Examples of what you could include are

  • research which has contributed to policy development

Additional information

This section is optional and is used to give context for the rest of your résumé.

Examples of what you could include if needed are

  • career breaks
  • secondments
  • voluntary work

Focus on how the issue has affected your career, rather than expanding on the issue itself.
