On the programme

"Research Councils have a responsibility to scrutinise the potential impacts and risks of emerging technologies and encourage the researchers to do likewise....The challenge will be to define an approach that promotes creativity and innovation in research underpinned by a commitment to its responsible development. "
David Delpy 2011

Up to now, funding from the Research Council in the areas of responsible innovation and corporate social responsibility has been limited and fragmented. The programmes dedicated to research on corporate social responsibility and responsible technological development, the Programme on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the Programme on the Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects of Biotechnology, Nanotechnology and Neurotechnology (ELSA), were concluded in 2010 and 2014, respectively.

At the same time, there is increasing focus on research and on how stakeholders, including the Research Council, are dealing with ethical issues and exercising their shared responsibility for societal development. The Research Council must further develop its role and practices, and as part of this development, the Council has decided to launch a new programme to promote research on responsible innovation and corporate social responsibility.

Activities will focus on two priority research areas and a component developing Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI):

  • Research on responsible innovation
  • CSR research
  • Development of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)

Because of its limited budget and the character of the research areas, the new initiative will cooperate with relevant programmes, activities and instruments at the Research Council on funding announcements and grant allocations. The first call for proposal was made together with the RCN's new initiative on ICT, "IKTPLUSS". The deadline for submitting applications was February 11, 2015.
