Input from all actors is important
The research strategy for Ny-Ålesund will set the framework for research activity at the Ny-Ålesund Research Station. Collaboration with all actors doing research in Ny-Ålesund is therefore important at an early stage. RCN has in the draft strategy built on the solid foundation developed by Ny-Ålesund Science Managers Committee (NySMAC), consultative meetings and written input.

"We are grateful for all the input we already have received and the constructive dialogue we have had with both national and international research institutions", states Rune Vistad, Director of Department of Climate and Polar Research at the Research Council. "We are hoping that the research actors will contribute in this consultation process, helping us to develop a strategy that sets a clear framework for international research activity as well keeping up high ambitions for the research", says Mr Vistad.

How to give input

All interested in Ny-Ålesund research are welcome to give input to this public consultation. We especially encourage input from actors conducting research in Ny-Ålesund. We are asking that input in general is given on an institutional level.

About the strategy

The Research Council of Norway (RCN) has been tasked by the Ministry of Research and Education to develop a broad-based research strategy for Ny-Ålesund. The strategy was announced in the white paper on Svalbard (Meld. St. 32(2015-2016)) and is to be developed within the framework set in the Strategy for research and higher education in Svalbard. The strategy is expected to be ready in March 2019.

"Our goal is to follow up on the high ambitions that Norway has for research in Svalbard and to build on the already good established collaboration and excellent science done in in Ny-Ålesund", says Mr Vistad. "Ny-Ålesund is an important Norwegian platform for international research and is a unique research location and should be exploited in the best possible way".
