Health, safety and work environment in the petroleum sector

Health, safety and environment (HSE) is an integral part of PETROMAKS 2. The goal of the Norwegian petroleum industry to be world leading in HSE stands firm.

Illustrasjonsbilde (Photo: Statoil) The goal is affirmed in the central White Papers over the last decade. The current government has repeatedly stressed that the goal remains.

Knowledge is the key to safe petroleum activities. In order to reach the government's stated vision that Norway should be world leading in HSE in petroleum activities , Norway needs a continued investment in research and innovation within HSE in the petroleum sector. The need for more knowledge in the area is also supported by the Long-Term Plan for research and higher education from 2015 to 2024. Such R & D investment has historically been part of the major programmes for petroleum research in the Research Council of Norway.

Expert group

An expert group has been appointed to follow up projects within HSE.

An evaluation conducted by Oxford Research shows that commitment to HSE in petroleum programmes over the last 10 years has led to projects of high scientific quality and relevance, and contributed to better cooperation between research and industry. The evaluation also recommended a continuation and adjustment of the focus on the area (Oxford Research AS 2015).

Following the recommendations in the evaluation report the Research Council of Norway has prepared a knowledge base for continued R & D efforts in the area. The work is carried out with the support of an external expert group.

The group consists of:

Håkon Aasen Bjerkeli Industri Energi
Jakob Nærheim Statoil
Roy Erling Furre SAFE
Bodil Sophia Krohn The Norwegian Oil and Gas Association
Berit Sørset The Federation of Norwegian Industries
Øyvind Lauridsen The Norwegian Petroleum Directorate
Frank Børre Pedersen DNV

You can read more about the knowledge base for continued R & D efforts on the area here.
