Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI)

Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is a strategic priority under the BIOTEK2021 programme and refers to an approach in which research, technology development and innovation are viewed as socially interwoven processes. This page presents information on and news related to RRI, from both the Research Council of Norway and Europe.

The challenge lies in deriving maximum positive benefits for society from the technologies while staying focused on potential, unintended negative impacts and risks related to the same technologies. The Research Council of Norway is active on several fronts contributing to and securing Responsible Research and Innovation

Applicants to BIOTEK2021 must in their projects describe relevant research questions to be addressed by the project relating to health, safety and environment (HSE) and/or ethical, legal and social aspects (ELSA) of the research or other RRI perspectives, and should preferably involve stakeholders, when relevant. Four keywords are:

  • Look forward!
  • Think through!
  • Invite along!
  • Work together!

A more detailed description of the concept RRI and examples of the incorporation of RRI perspectives into BIOTEK2021-funded projects may be found in the attachments in the colon to the right (see Documents).
