About the Svalbard Research Office:

The Svalbard Research Office (SFK) is run by the Research Council of Norway and the Norwegian Polar Institute. The office is located in the Svalbard Research Park in Longyearbyen.

The SFK will have a coordinating and advisory role for research actors and Norwegian authorities, and will thereby stimulate increased collaboration between research actors, both in Norway and internationally, in line with the mandate given by the Ministry of Climate and Environment and the Ministry of Education and Research in 2025. Among the main tasks are to:

  • Implement and follow up the strategy for research and higher education in Svalbard
  • Be a first point of contact and a resource for national and international research communities in Svalbard and provide relevant information and guidance on framework conditions and guidelines
  • Coordinate research activity and sharing of infrastructure, data and results to reduce the burden on nature and the environment
  • Facilitate high-quality research  Prepare an annual report on all research activity in Svalbard
  • Advise research actors and Norwegian authorities in accordance with current policies and strategies, and maintain ongoing contact with central and local authorities
  • If necessary, assist the Governor in the planning and implementation of official visits to Svalbard (with the exception of visits to Ny-Ålesund, which are covered by special guidelines), with a particular focus on presenting the research activity in the archipelago, as well as receiving visits from other relevant research actors
  • Coordinate and coordinate various cooperation forums within research in Svalbard Arrange the Svalbard Science Conference in collaboration with relevant partners
  • The dialogue with the research communities will include the Svalbard Science Advisory Forum (SSAF). SSAF will be an advisory forum for SFK, and a meeting place for knowledge sharing and networking. SFK will in particular collaborate with UNIS, SIOS and NySMAC.
