How we classify the research we fund

The Research Council provides funding to projects in a wide range of prioritised thematic areas. Activities in these areas are to contribute to achieving the objectives of the Government’s Long-term Plan for Research and Higher Education and to address key societal challenges. We fund both basic and applied research within the thematic areas.

Each research project may be classified under multiple thematic areas. Thus, the total allocation of funding indicated for each thematic area may exceed the actual total of the project allocations.
