Tasks and organising
The Research Council works to promote research and innovation of high quality and relevance and to generate knowledge in priority areas to enable Norway to deal with key challenges to society and the business sector.
The Research Council’s organisation reflects the spheres of activity of our various stakeholders. We are organised into seven divisions:
- Society and Health
- Industries and Technologies
- Resource Industries and the Environment
- Science and the Research System
- International Cooperation
- Organisational Development and Digitalisation
The Executive Board has 11 members and is responsible for overseeing the Research Council’s activities and providing advice on research policy. The members have broad insight into research, innovation, the business sector and other societal issues, and represent the various geographic regions of Norway.
The Research Council has 15 portfolio boards. Each board is responsible for a portfolio of programmes and other activities within a thematic area or a discipline.
Our purpose and values
Our purpose is to facilitate research that promotes innovation and sustainability. We will:
- convey our messages clearly;
- think innovatively;
- be professional in our attitude and actions.

The Research Council has established an independent standing committee of international experts to provide advice on research and innovation policy.
