ERC Starting Grant 2017:

Six awarded ERC Starting Grants

Six researchers from Norwegian institutions have been awarded a European Research Council Starting Grant in 2017. Each Starting Grant provides funding of up to NOK 14 million. Five of the six grant recipients are women.

The Norwegian Starting Grant recipients are: Trude Storelvmo, University of Oslo, Ruth Jane Prince, University of Oslo, Katrine Vellesen Løken, University of Bergen, Jana Jágerská, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Kyrre Eeg Emblem, Oslo University Hospital and May-Britt Tessem, Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

There were two Norwegian grants allocated within each of the three areas of natural science, medicine/biotechnology and the humanities/social sciences.

“We’re very pleased that five of the six Starting Grants Norwegian institutions have won under the 2017 call for proposals are going to women researchers,” states Per Ivar Høvring, National Contact Point (NCP) for the ERC at the Research Council of Norway.

“In addition to the six winners, there were many applicants who advanced to stage two of ERC’s evaluation process. A relatively large number of these applications met the quality threshold but could not be funded due to budgetary constraints,” Mr Høvring explains, and points out that these candidates may still apply for up to NOK 500 000 from the Research Council's funding scheme for independent projects (FRIPRO) to further refine their proposals for one of the two upcoming ERC calls.

Three of this year’s six Starting Grant awardees have also been recipients of Young Research Talents grants under the FRIPRO scheme. The application type Young Research Talents is aimed at researchers at an early stage in their careers.
