Who is eligible to apply?
Norwegian research institutions, universities/university colleges, actors in trade and industry, public sector and special interest organisations with national influence and groups of these are eligible to apply for funding.

Amount of funding
The Research Council may cover up to 50 per cent of eligible costs. The Council will only cover costs incurred after the grant application has been submitted. Funding will be disbursed based on a report of actual incurred costs. The amount of funding to be awarded will be assessed individually for each grant application and will depend on the size of the project. The maximum support that may be awarded is NOK 50 000.

The purpose of this type of funding is to promote Norwegian research interests in strategic processes taking place in the European Research Area (ERA) and to work to ensure that Norway’s national priorities and research needs are incorporated into plans that are ultimately realised in the form of new calls for proposals. The overall objective is to increase Norwegian participation in the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020) and other European transport research initiatives.

The funding is intended to encourage Norwegian actors to participate in scientific fora, interest groups, etc. operating in arenas that provide input to various initiatives in the ERA. These include Horizon 2020, technology platforms, Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs), public-private partnerships and similar initiatives in which transport research is an important component. The forum or activity for which funding is being sought must be a formal body under the ERA.

What does the funding cover?

  • Direct costs for travel and subsistence in connection with meetings.
  • Payroll costs in connection with participation in meetings/workshops in EU fora, including some preparatory and follow-up work, for stays of generally two to three days. Some additional support is available for participants in leadership roles.
  • Limited preparatory and follow-up work in connection with the organisation of shadow groups/collaboration meetings/workshops, when relevant.
  • Costs in connection with events for national shadow groups/information and coordination meetings, when relevant.

Payroll costs will be covered in accordance with the Research Council’s fixed rates. Information on the calculation of hourly rates is available at – Apply for funding > Application information > Project budgets > Payroll expenses and rates.
