The EU framework programme Horizon 2020 is the largest research and innovation programme globally with a budget of appr. 70 billion euro for the years 2014-2020. Norway participates fully as an associated country. Horizon 2020 is designed along three main pillars:

  • Excellent Science with the European Research Council (ERC), the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA), Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) and support for research infrastructures.
  • Industrial Leadership. Here you find key enabling technologies such as ICT, nano-, bio- and space technologies, production processes and advanced materials, financial instruments for risk capital, and innovation in SMEs.
  • Societal Challenges is the third pillar of H2020, where support for research within seven big societal challenges is found.
