Conference: After “The Humanities in Norway” report – what now?

This spring, the Government presented a white paper on the humanities, Meld. St. 25 (2016–2017) – The Humanities in Norway. The white paper points out that it is essential to incorporate humanities research perspectives more widely into the efforts to deal with major societal challenges. The Research Council of Norway is hosting a conference to discuss how the humanities should move forward in light of the white paper.


The white paper on the humanities identifies three thematic areas where contributions from humanities research are particularly relevant:

  • integration, migration and conflict;
  • major technological shifts;
  • climate, the environment and sustainability.

The Minister of Education and Research has emphasised that the humanities must be better integrated into other thematic research initiatives. The research community and the Research Council are now taking active steps to follow up the white paper. The conference addresses the question of where humanities research is, or where it should be, post-white paper. What is the path ahead for humanities research?
