Authority Beyond States: European Institutions in International Perspective

This is an application for a Eon Ruhrgas grant in order to partially fund the 5th AUSTAT international workshop on 'Authority Beyond States: European Institutions in International Perspective', to be held at the University of Bremen in September 2013. The project addresses the exercise of authority by international institutions from a multi-disciplinary outlook. The project has three primary objectives:(1) To promote high quality research on international authority by arranging the 5th AUSTAT Internatio nal Workshop on Authority Beyond States at the University of Bremen, September 2013.(2) To stimulate networking among promising junior researchers in political science, international relations and international law in Norway and Germany.(3) To encoura ge publication in international, peer-reviewed academic outlets.Substantively, the project addresses three sets of questions concerning the growing exercise of authority by international institutions within and beyond the wider framework of European int egration: (i) The nature of the growth of international institutional authority; (ii) its causes and effects; (iii) its legal and philosophical implications.The organizing committee will invite 15 researchers from political science, international relati ons and international law to present their research on these topics, and two internationally renowned senior scholars to give keynote speeches at the workshop.The project will produce a number of positive results:(a) In the short term, the project arra nges a multi-disciplinary workshop.(b) In the medium term, the project furthers high-quality publications.(c) In the long term, the project helps sustaining dynamic networks across disciplinary and national boundaries.
