Promoting patient and professional competencies in diabetes care and management - a prerequisite for high-quality evidence-based health care

Diabetes is one of the major diseases of our time. Despite the growing ageing population, the prevalence of diabetes in home-based care and nursing homes is still unknown, and the challenges facing health care services in maintaining high-quality care and the steps needed to ensure proper workforce competencies have not been outlined. Less than 20% of people with type 2 diabetes in primary care settings in Norway achieve the recommended treatment goals. The project consisting of four Work Packages (WP's) and two Horizontal Activities are intended to extend knowledge on researching complex interventions. Two intervention studies (WP1 and WP2) are designed to promote patients' competencies in self-management and health care professionals' ability to use new technology in diabetes care. In WP3 focus groups will be used to explore the experiences and challenges health care professionals face in implementing complex interventions and evidence-based guidelines. Moreover, in WP4 medical records and computerized information systems are used to assess diabetes prevalence, and quality and effectiveness of health services. The two horizontal activities describe 1) the research training and career development; and 2) user involvement in all phases of the project. The project accelerates collaboration with international research groups and expands the critical mass of researchers at Bergen University College (HiB). The research environment benefits BSc and stimulates MSc students and PhD candidates to pursue a researc h career. The project operationalizes the Strategic Research Programme in Evidence-Based Practice in Health Services at HiB challenging the gap between research and its implementation promoting an evidence-based practice. The project results will form a b asis for policy-makers and professionals to make decisions on coordinating specialist and primary health care services.
