Vestlandsforsking has invited Maya van den Berg from CSTM, the University of Twente, to stay as visiting researcher for a period of four months from August to November 2013. Although she is a young researcher, van den Berg has claimed a central position w ithin European research on the interface between civil preparedness and climate adaptation in local communities, and she participated in the NORKLIMA project CIVILCLIM in 2009 and 2010.The main objective is to maintain and develop the co-operation betwe en researchers at Vestlandsforsking and the University of Twente in CIVILCLIM, in order to consolidate the position of Vestlandsforsking in research on local vulnerability and adaptation to climate change. This will be done by conveying insights gained th rough van den Berg's PhD to the research environment at Vestlandsforsking. In her research on civil preparedness for climate change in local communities, she applies risk perception and policy integration as theoretical underpinnings for local climate ada ptation. These perspectives fit well with current project activities at Vestlandsforsking, to which van den Berg will contribute: One work package of the BIVUAC project (NORKLIMA) analyses how the building sector interprets and copes with its vulnerabilit y to climate change, and how building and planning legislation influence on adaptation policies. The AREALKLIM project (the Regional Research Fund of Western Norway) has as its main goal to increase the ability of local and regional spatial planning in pr eventing weather related natural hazards to cause damages. Van den Berg will facilitate workshops within both projects.Maya van den Berg´s participation in project activites at Vestlandsforsking will result in one scientific paper; a comparative study a ssessing the integration of climate change adaptation concern in land use planning in the Netherlands and Norway. The results will also be reported in popular science journals in both Norway and the Netherlands.
