Cross-Layer Optimisation of Short-Range Wireless Sensor Networks, Part 2

In the following summary mainly the planned research of the Norwegian side is targeted, with a general introduction to the project target application. The project will use a target application to focus the scientific work and enhance research cooperation . The target application is sensing of radio signals with a primary motivating application in cognitive radio systems. The project contains work for solving problems related to this application in the areas of sensing strategies, cooperative communication s within the network, node design and network dimensioning and design. For the Norwegian side of the work, the most important task will be the co-optimization of distributed sensing algorithms suited for electro-magnetic signal detection, and co-operativ e transmission methods. The sensing part will concentrate on finding efficient strategies for combining information of very low signal-to-noise ratios from several nodes to perform signal presence detection. This will mean efficient methods for joint sou rce-channel coding for information exchange between the nodes and potentially an information sink. The cooperative communications part will focus on finding methods for throughput- and delay guarantees in multiuser systems with a number of candidate topol ogies: fully centralized, partially centralized with multiple sinks or fully distributed. Opportunistic cooperative access schemes, routing and relaying methods and joint multi-user detection and decoding strategies will receive the most attention. The sc aling properties of the access schemes will be an important issue.
