  • Chemical research sans chemicals

    Professor Kenneth Ruud can perform chemical research without using a single chemical. Instead, he builds mathematical models of chemical compounds and lets the computer calculate how they will react with each other. The pharmaceutical industry, climate researchers and many others are following along eagerly as this research opens up entirely new possibilities.

  • New ICT solutions will benefit modern health care

    Patients will soon be able to communicate with their doctor and update their own medical records from a home computer or mobile phone. Meanwhile, doctors, from wherever they may be, can access flexible electronic patient records, independent of terminal. VERDIKT, the Research Council's large-scale ICT programme, directs 8.8 per cent of its project funding toward applications in the health care sector.

  • GLOBVAC: Major focus on vaccination research

    Norway is helping to establish the second centre in the world that can administer large-scale clinical testing of vaccines against tuberculosis. At the same time, Norwegian researchers are developing a therapeutic vaccine that boosts the immune system of patients with HIV. These are among the projects that receive funding through the Global Health and Vaccination Research Programme (GLOBVAC).

    Norway's newly appointed Minister of Research, Ms Tora Aasland, opened Norwegian Science Week on 22 October in Washington. The programme focused on achieving closer collaboration between Norway and the USA on climate research - with industry in a key supporting role.

  • The Research Council's project database is now accessible

    From 1997 to the present, the Research Council of Norway has granted funding to more than 20 000 R&D projects. A database containing information on these projects is now accessible to the public on the Research Council website. Users can search the database to find information about projects within a specific subject field, learn where a project was carried out, and more.

  • Government's research budget met with disappointment

    The proposed allocations to research in 2008 fall short of the Research Council's expectations. "We are disappointed with this budget," said Arvid Hallén, Director General of the Research Council of Norway, when the Norwegian Government presented its combined R&D budget of NOK 17.8 billion on 5 October.

    A new Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine designated to advancing the understanding of molecular mechanisms underpinning disease was launched on 3 October. Partners to the agreement are the European Molecular Laboratory (EMBL), the University of Oslo, Norway, the University of Helsinki, Finland, and Umeå University, Sweden.

    In December 2006, eight newcomers achieved status as Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Norway, bringing the total number of CoEs up to 21.   • Mathematician and physicist honoured

    The Research Council of Norway's Møbius Prize for Outstanding Research 2007 has been awarded to Professor Idun Reiten. Reiten is a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Professor Egil Lillestøl, of the Department of Physics and Technology at the University of Bergen, received this year's Award for Excellence in Communication of Science.

  • National research festival puts the spotlight on International Polar Year

    Friday, 21 September, marks the kick off of National Science Week in Norway 2007 (Forskningsdagene). Throughout the country, Norwegian researchers will take to the streets, libraries, movie theatres and other public venues to talk about what they do and how they do it. During a ten-day period, over 1,000 events will give the general public a glimpse into the fascinating world of research.
