MabCent - Marine bioactives & drug discovery
The centre's objective is to lay foundations for the development of high-value bioactive products by screening organisms from the Arctic marine environment.
Host institution: University of Tromsø
Company partners: Lytix Biopharma AS, Biotec Pharmacon ASA, Pronova Biopharma AS, ABC Bioscience AS
Budget: Approx. NOK 180 million over eight years
Director/contact: Professor Trond Ø. Jørgensen
In the Arctic, the combination of low temperatures and other special conditions creates an entirely unique marine environment. Much of the Arctic's sea life has therefore evolved in different directions than in other marine areas, resulting in many organisms that have unique characteristics. They provide opportunities for finding bioactive materials with properties that can help us in the ongoing battle against disease. MabCent will undertake research into bioactive products from these organisms.
