The Norwegian Microarray Consortium (NMC)
The aim of The Norwegian Microarray Consortium (NMC) is to provide microarray technology and high-throughput genomics services to the Norwegian scientific society by building up Core Facilities at the universities of Bergen, Oslo and Trondheim.
Platform leaders
2010: Professor Vidar M. Steen, University of Bergen
2011: Professor Arne Sandvik, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
2012: Professor Ola Myklebost, University of Oslo/Rikshospitalet University Hospital
Organization
The Norwegian Microarray Consortium (NMC) is a collaboration between groups from the University of Oslo and Oslo University Hospital, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and the University of Bergen.
NMC was founded in 2000 and runs the national microarray technology platform under the Functional Genomics (FUGE) program of the Research Council of Norway. NMC has three regional microarray core facilities in Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim, and collaborates with the microarray unit at the University of Tromsø. The NMC has a large network of collaborators with similar facilities and research groups in Scandinavia and Europe.
Vision and aims
The aim of Norwegian Microarray Consortium (NMC) is to provide state of the art microarray-based technology services to the Norwegian scientific community.
The NMC provides cutting-edge scientific competence on the use of microarray technologies for the analysis of gene and genome structure and function, as well as competence to advice and support users on non-mammalian organisms and non-mainstream applications. This, lowers the threshold for using advanced technologies among research groups, and improves research quality through assistance from experienced personnel and optimal technology.
Technology and services
Through a common platform, the resource centres offer different services including microarray production, hybridisation and data analysis. The NMC supports a large number of commercial platforms (i.e. Affymetrix, Agilent, Illumina, Nimblegen), as well as NMC microarrays and is building up competence on (Illumina-based) massive parallel sequencing. The NMC works together with other FUGE technology platforms (in particular Bioinformatics).
