Department for Petroleum Research
Director: Siri Helle Friedemann
The Department for Petroleum Research is responsible for research, innovation and demonstration efforts in the petroleum sector. Activities encompass the upstream oil sector, value creation from natural gas and HSE-efforts within the petroleum sector, as well as market knowledge and social conditions as a basis for strategic planning and policy design on the part of the Norwegian authorities and industry.
The department works to achieve advances in expertise and technology that can improve the exploitation of Norwegian petroleum resources and enhance the competence of Norwegian players within the research community and petroleum industry alike.
The department cooperates extensively with authorities, trade and industry, and national and international research institutions. The department oversees strategic planning, advisory and funding tasks associated with the petroleum sector, and administers the following research programmes: the Large-scale Programme for Optimal Management of Petroleum Resources (PETROMAKS), the DEMO 2000 Programme, the Programme on Maximising Value Creation in the Natural Gas Chain (GASSMAKS) and the Programme on Social Science Petroleum Research (PETROSAM). In addition, the department hosts the secretariat for the government strategy initiative OG21 (Oil and Gas in the 21st century).
