Nysgjerrigper Science Knowledge Project

The Nysgjerrigper Science Knowledge Project for schoolchildren has been administered under the auspices of the Research Council of Norway for more than twenty years.

In Norwegian the term 'nysgjerrigper' is used to describe an individual who asks questions about everything imaginable.

Approximately 3,000 classes, totalling almost 80,000 pupils (2007) are currently participating in the Nysgjerrigper Science Knowledge Project. While 5th, 6th and 7th graders make up the predominant age group, many younger pupils take active part in the science project as well.

Magazine
The Nysgjerrigper magazine is published 4 times a year, and presents information and research from disciplines ranging from science and technology to the humanities. Articles are written so as to be easily understood by children aged nine and up. The magazine is also very popular among teachers, as it offers an up-to date presentation of research activities.

Annual science competition
Children are invited to carry out small-scale research projects and compete for the annual Nysgjerrigper Science Award. A special jury consisting of researchers, science communicators and teachers is appointed to evaluate and select the best projects.

Work manual
A Nysgjerrigper work manual has been devised and offers simple instruction in research methodology. The manual (in Norwegian and English versions) is distributed free of charge.
A short, instructive methodology course is also available, and has been attended by more than 3,000 teachers.

Internet
In 2003, the Nysgjerrigper project launched an interactive web site, dedicated to children interested in science and research: www.nysgjerrigper.no.
