The US-based William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has committed USD 2 million to the new ECONPOP programme on economics, population dynamics and reproductive health.
This is the first time that an international, private foundation contributes funding to a research programme administered by the Research Council of Norway. The rest of the funding will come in part from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) and in part from the Research Council itself.
ECONPOP is the acronym for Research on Economic Growth, Poverty Reduction, Reproductive Health and Population Dynamics, a sub-programme under the Norway - Global partner programme (NORGLOBAL).
The new programme aims at understanding how population dynamics and reproductive health outcomes may impact economic growth and poverty reduction, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. ECONPOP has recently announced its first call for proposals with the application deadline set for 2 September 2009.
The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation was established in 1966 by the entrepreneur William Hewlett and his wife. Today, the Foundation has assets worth more than USD 6 billion. In 2007, the foundation distributed approx. USD 483 million dollars in grants to help solve social and environmental problems both in the US and worldwide.
