New Norwegian Centres of Excellence

In 2003 the Research Council of Norway and seven host institutions established 13 Centres of Excellence (CoEs). These were so successful that the Norwegian Government has decided to set up another 5 to 10 centres.

The new call for proposals for CoEs will be announced early this summer, and the closing date for prequalification applications will be in the autumn of 2005. The final decisions will be made following the final application round in 2006. The new centres will then be established in the spring of 2007.
The new call for proposals will follow the general procedure of the first call, although the new scheme for the Centres for Research-based Innovation (CRIs) will entail some minor changes.

"The new call for proposals for CoEs places even more weight on scientific quality. The last call also considered relevance, utility value for society and commercial potential. This time these elements are not considered. Furthermore, equal rights issues will be more important than in the previous call," says special adviser Gro Helgesen at the Division for Science at the Research Council of Norway.
