Research cooperation between Norway and Japan is based on a bilateral agreement on research and technology from 2003 involving extensive cooperation between universities and institutes in both countries within a wide range of sectors.
The agreement has facilitated cooperation on energy, new materials/nanotechnology and food safety. In addition, space and climate research, as well as research on the northern areas, have been introduced as potential areas for future cooperation. Please find the bilateral research and technology agreement under "Other websites".
Mobility grants
Highly qualified Ph.D. students and younger researchers from Japan may apply for grants to conduct research in Norway under the Research Council’s YGGDRASIL mobility programme.
The Research Council, in conjunction with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), offers grants to Norwegian Ph.D. students and post-doctoral researchers who want to conduct research at Japanese research institutions. Japanese researchers may apply for funding for research stays in Norway through the same scheme.
