Independent projects are the Research Council's key funding instrument for independent, researcher-initiated basic research that is not associated with any specific research programme or infrastructure measure. Independent projects may also be initiated by users.
Allocations to independent projects make up in excess of 11 per cent of the Research Council's overall annual budget.
The most important activity in this category is the Independent projects scheme (FRIPRO) which provides funding for independent projects in an open national competitive arena on the basis of scientific merit.
