Call for proposals for funding for companies with employees seeking to pursue a doctoral degree

Objectives:

The Industrial Ph.D. scheme for funding for industry-oriented doctoral research fellowships has been established to facilitate the recruitment of researchers to Norwegian industry.

The Research Council works to boost research activity in Norwegian companies and provides support for doctoral research projects. The authorities expect the Research Council to help to increase knowledge intensity in Norwegian industry through the recruitment of doctoral candidates, among other things. There is a clear need for greater interaction between academia and society and industry. New recruitment measures are called for to increase research activity in industry and promote knowledge transfer from researchers to society at large.

The Division for Innovation currently awards grants to more than 500 research fellows under the user-driven innovation programmes. The Industrial Ph.D. scheme is being expanded, which will give rise to a small but critical increase in the total number of candidates and will give companies the opportunity to enhance their research expertise without having to participate in a more comprehensive project (Innovation Project for the Industrial Sector or Knowledge-building Project for Industry).

Funding for industry-oriented doctoral research fellowships will help many companies to step up their research efforts. The Industrial Ph.D. scheme does not represent a new type of doctoral degree, but is designed to support long-term, industry-oriented basic research that has the same level of scientific merit as the general doctoral degree education.

The scheme accepts grant applications from trade and industry. A company may be granted funding for maximum two new candidates per year.

Only companies engaged in market-oriented activities are eligible to apply for funding under this scheme. Enterprises that are publicly funded, carry out administrative tasks for the state or municipal authorities or produce goods for their own consumption will normally not be eligible to seek funding. The same applies to associations and other organisations with aims other than economic value creation. Companies with only one employee do not qualify for funding under the Industrial Ph.D. scheme.

The scheme’s target group does not include independent research institutes or health trusts. The scheme does not provide support for completion of doctoral degree educations that are already underway.
