Objectives:

Svalbard Science Forum (SSF) promotes Svalbard as a national and international research platform. Its tasks are to coordinate and facilitate research in Svalbard as well as providing information for researchers, managers and the public.

SSF aims to enhance collaboration and coordination within research in Svalbard with three funding programmes:

  • Arctic Field Grants
  • SSF Workshops
  • SSF Support Funds

SSF supports students and researchers collecting data in Svalbard (and Jan Mayen). SSF also supports the further development and realisation of SSF prioritised areas as outlined in the SSF cooperation workshop reports and Ny-Ålesund flagship documents , and the initiation of new efforts to better coordinate research in Svalbard.

Strategic objectives
Svalbard Science Forum announces funding for field work, workshops, and projects that promote the scientific and strategic objectives of SSF and the Polar Strategy of the Research Council of Norway. Applications from both Norwegian and international researchers are welcome, but the application shall be submitted by a Norwegian research institution.

The SSF funding programmes aim to:

  • increase international and interdisciplinary research cooperation in Svalbard
  • promote research that minimises the environmental footprint
  • facilitate sharing of data collected in Svalbard

This programme/activity normally accepts grant applications from:

Norwegian research institutions, Universities and University Colleges, applying on behalf of Norwegian and international partners.

Duration:

2012-2015

Overall budget:

Approximately 4-5 mill. NOK per year.
