NOK 215 million in funding for independent projects – Medicine, Health Sciences and Biology Choose
Open-ended Personal overseas research grant FRIMEDBIO Choose

Objectives:

The funding scheme for independent projects (FRIPRO) comprises a national competitive arena for research funding for projects in all fields and disciplines.

Activities under the FRIPRO scheme are to promote:

• research of internationally leading scientific quality;
• pioneering and innovative research;
• careers for talented young researchers.

Grants are awarded on the basis of the scientific merit of the project. A new element in this year’s call is that greater importance will be attached to the scientific renewal and boldness in thinking demonstrated in the proposals.

The Research Council has introduced a new application category to provide better career opportunities for talented young researchers. This is targeted towards young researchers in the early stage of their careers who have demonstrated the ability to conduct independent research of high scientific quality.

As from this call, the application category Researcher Project is reserved for established researchers with experience well beyond one post-doctoral period. Further information is available under the specific requirements and guidelines for the relevant application category and type.

Grant applications must be submitted to one of the following activities:

• Independent Projects – the Humanities and Social Science (FRIHUMSAM)
• Independent Projects – Medicine, Health Sciences and Biology (FRIMEDBIO)
• Independent Projects – Mathematics, Physical Science and Technology (FRINATEK)

As from this year’s call for proposals, the humanities and social sciences have been grouped together under one activity.

The grant proposal will be processed by the activity to which it has been submitted. If the grant proposal addresses topics in the interface between two activities, the Research Council may, in consultation with the applicant, decide to redirect the proposal for processing under another activity under the FRIPRO scheme.

For more information about the FRIPRO scheme and the grant application review process, please see the FRIPRO webpages

This programme/activity normally accepts grant applications from:

Norwegian research institutions (universities, university colleges, independent research institutes, or other institutions at which research constitutes an important activity), Nordic research-performing institutions funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers, and research institutions that receive public funding from at least three Nordic countries, including Norway. Please refer to the Research Council’s definition and specification of the concept “research institution”. Please note that Nordic institutions are only eligible to submit grant applications for Researcher Projects.

Duration:

Open-ended

Overall budget:

The overall budget for new independent projects is NOK 527 million under this call for proposals. In addition, there may be an increase in the FRIPRO budget in keeping with the Research Council’s proposal for the national budget for 2014. This increase may comprise up to NOK 300 million in earmarked funding for Young Research Talents under a second joint funding initiative with Norway’s universities.

Up to NOK 215 million is available for allocation to new projects under FRIMEDBIO from 2014. This funding is to cover grants for the new projects for the entire project period. It is also intended to cover any allocations for proposals for European Research Council (ERC) grants under the Research Council’s incentive schemes.
