The SAMKUL programme’s conference on the relevance and social responsibility of the humanities will shed light on how the humanities and closely related fields can help to meet the challenges facing society and support the conditions for critical research.

What is the role of the humanities in today’s research policy and what are society’s needs for humanities research? Is the essence of the humanities maintained when the focal point of research is its usefulness to society and does critical research suffer when the focus is targeted towards relevance?

These and other issues will be discussed when the Research Council’s Programme on the Cultural Conditions Underlying Social Change (SAMKUL) holds its start-up conference.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together researchers, students, public administrators, media professionals and other interested parties to discuss how the humanities can contribute to enhancing the knowledge base for addressing modern social challenges. The conference will provide a glimpse into humanities and other research related to social challenges in addition to presenting information that are targeted more towards research policy.
