National Science Week 2011 starts on Friday 23 September. During the week-long festival the Research Council and collaborators across the country work together in a large-scale communal effort to promote science and research.

The overall theme for the seventeenth National Science Week is “Magical and logical”, alluding to research in general and to chemistry in particular, in honour of the International Year of Chemistry which is celebrated in 2011.

Across the country researchers will be taking their work out to the general public, presenting their research on town squares and streets, in shopping centres, tents, cafes and restaurants, in libraries, on stages and at luncheons and, in a one-day event, on all the ships in the Hurtigruten fleet.

For the seventh time the National Science Week is the arena for the Norwegian contributions to the annual joint European event Researchers’ Night, under the auspices of the European Commission. This year 14 different local events will take place various places in Norway on Friday 23 September.

For the second year in a row young researchers have been invited to compete in the Researcher Grand Prix, an event where the candidates take the stage and are given four minutes to talk about their research. In the finals in Oslo during National Science Week the researcher best able to communicate his/her research will be crowned the national winner.

Almost all of the National Science Week events are free of charge and open to all. For more information about the various event locations, see the festival programme (in Norwegian).
