Department for Bioresources and Environmental Research

Director: Christina IM Abildgaard

The Department for Bioresources and Environmental Research is responsible for research as the foundation for environmental management of biological resources on land and at sea, and for the exploitation of marine resources. Activities encompass ecosystems, pollutants and both marine and terrestrial environmental technology.

In the field of marine resources, the department is responsible for research related to aquaculture, management and use of biological marine resources, global marine issues, pollution of the ocean environment from petroleum activities on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and issues relating to coastal zones.

The department works to advance research-based knowledge relating to the loss of biological diversity, sustainable management of oceans and increased value creation in the Norwegian aquaculture industry. Activities are also targeted towards enhancing the competence of Norwegian players within the research community and aquaculture industry alike.

The department cooperates extensively with authorities, trade and industry, and national and international research institutions. The department oversees strategic planning, advisory and funding tasks associated with the relevant areas. It administers the Large-scale Programme on Aquaculture – An Industry in Growth (HAVBRUK), as well as the programmes Norwegian environmental research towards 2015 (MILJO2015) and The Oceans and Coastal Areas (HAVKYST). The department is also responsible for following up the Joint Programming Initiative “Health and Productive Seas and Oceans”.
