Department for Energy Research
Director: Rune Volla
The Department for Energy Research is responsible for research, innovation and demonstration efforts in the energy sector. Activities encompass the entire spectrum of energy research, from the development of environment-friendly energy solutions to energy efficiency, including carbon capture and storage and environment-friendly transport.
The department works to promote effective exploitation of Norwegian energy resources as a step in increasing value creation in Norwegian industry. The department’s efforts are aimed at enhancing the knowledge base for policy development and increasing knowledge about market conditions and the application of policy instruments in Norway and internationally.
The department cooperates extensively with the authorities, trade and industry, and national and international research institutions. It is responsible for administration of two of the Research Council’s Large-scale Programmes: the Large-scale Programme on Energy REsearch (ENERGIX) and the Programme on Power Generation with Carbon Capture and Storage (CLIMIT). It is also responsible for follow-up of the Centres for Environment-friendly Energy Research (FME) scheme. In addition, the department hosts the secretariat for Norway’s national strategy initiative for the energy sector, Energi21.
