Department for Climate and Polar Research

Director: Camilla Schreiner

The Department for Climate and Polar Research is responsible for strengthening and coordinating the Research Council’s efforts in polar and climate-related research. Activities encompass research targeted towards new knowledge about the climate system, the impact of climate change on the natural environment and society – as a basis for adaptive responses – and knowledge for the development of national and international climate policy and policy instruments. The department is also charged with further developing and coordinating polar research, including the follow-up to the International Polar Year, and has special responsibilities in relation to Svalbard as a research platform.

The department works to increase access to research-based knowledge for the government administration and public at large, particularly as relates to climate change. The department’s activities are designed to enhance the knowledge base for policymaking and generate knowledge about the application of policy instruments in Norway and internationally.
The department cooperates extensively with authorities and national and international research institutions. The department oversees strategic planning, advisory and funding tasks associated with the climate and polar research. It administers the Large-scale Programme on Climate Change and its Impacts in Norway (NORKLIMA), as well as all activities relating to polar research.
