Basic funding to research institutes

The Research Council is responsible for providing basic funding to a wide array of research institutes. The institutes involved are determined in consultation between the Research Council, the institute itself and the allocating ministry. Basic funding is allocated on the basis of applications submitted in a closed round by research institutes encompassed by the scheme. Basic funding is awarded partly in the form of a basic allocation and partly as a strategic institute programme.

The basic allocation comprises long-term funding of the institute's core activities to promote development of expertise and research within key  areas.

A strategic institute programme is a limited project designed to promote long-term competence building and research in a specific subject area that is expected to play a significant role in the institute's future activities.
